When visiting Matlock, for those that are looking for a more adventurous activity, why not book an afternoon of rafting on the River Derwent.
If you’re looking for a different way to explore the river Derwent in Matlock, then rafting, kayaking or tubing may be for you.
Set up in 2012, the Rapid Horizons company was founded by rafting and kayaking enthusiasts. All guides are qualified by the National Governing Body for Paddle Sport and are extremely passionate about river guiding.
Rafting in Matlock
Prices for rafting start at just £29. The full extent of the River Derwent covers 66 miles before it exits onto the River Trent. The section for rafting covers just 4.5 miles of this, beginning Darley Dale and Matlock Bath.
This experience on the River Derwent is split into two. The upper section provides a more picturesque experience, paddling through the Derbyshire hills and the river’s twists and turns.
For the braver ones amongst you, equally as beautiful, the lower section tackles the river’s rapids. You can spot the climbers on the incredible High Tor Cliff, and paddle through the Wind Tunnel.
No experience is required to kayak the same section of the river, however, the ability to swim is essential for all activities. Tandem kayaks are great for working in pairs, and you’ll be accompanied by a guide in a separate kayak at all times. Prices also start from £29.
For both activities, the trip lasts approximately 2 hours. This includes a brief on the activity and getting kitted up. The length of the trip covers approximately 5km, and each raft can take up to 8 people. The minimum age for this activity is 6, and the maximum weight is 20 stone.
Prices for tubing start at £35. Tubing is great fun. Simply float down the river on a custom made tube for 40 minutes of twisting and turning fun. Navigate the river’s rapids using the specifically designed hand paddle, as you take in the fantastic views.
Tubing covers approximately 1.5km, and lasts for around 1.5 hours including the brief and kit up.
Rapid Horizons also have toilet and shower facilities on site, with food and drinks served all day. As a souvenir from this exhilarating experience, guests can take away a DVD of photos and video. Wetsuits are also available for hire.
